Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom has been preparing the land for the upcoming Tron attraction behind and to the left of Space Mountain since early this year. We now have a billboard to go with the construction as well as some updates.
Tron was announced during the 2017 D23 Expo as part of the expansion for the 50th anniversary of Magic Kingdom Park in 2021. Since that time there has been a lot of talk regarding where it will go and how will it effect the other attractions near it. Land clearing started back in early 2018 and we got word that not much will change in Tomorrowland as the coaster will fit around the current set up of the land. Today the Disney Parks Blog announced that there will be some modification made to a couple of nearby attractions as construction roars ahead.
The Walt Disney World Railroad will temporarily shut down operation beginning in December of 2018 as work begins behind and to the left of Space Mountain. The train will take a temporary home and park at the Main Street U.S.A. station where guests can get an up-close look at the railroad and take special photos. This is very similar to what Disneyland did when the Disneyland Railroad had to shut down due to Galaxy’s Edge construction.
The railroad is not the only temporary casualty due to Tron construction, the Tomorrowland Speedway will also close for a portion of early 2019. The nostalgic Speedway will undergo a track adjustment and will re-open in the summer of 2019.
Magic Kingdom’s Tron attraction, which is set to debut in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021, is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland (pictured above). This coaster-style attraction allows riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a thrilling race through the digital frontier. Magic Kingdom also debuted a new Tron ‘Now Programming’ billboard that sits on the left side of the railroad tracks and is visible from New Fantasyland’s Storybook Circus.
