Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek made some major announcements this past week at the 2018 D23 Destination D event. One of those announcements included details regarding the replacements for Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. Yes, replacements.
Chapek confirmed that there will be a limited-time nighttime show called ‘Epcot Forever’ that will replace the 20 year run of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth in the Fall of 2019. (We wrote a short piece about that show here) This interim show will run until 2020 when the more extravagant ‘A Celebration of Disney Music’ will debut as the parks major nighttime spectacular.
‘A Celebration of Disney Music’ will celebrate how Disney music inspires people around the world, and will feature massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, choreographed moving fountains, lights, pyrotechnics and lasers.
We have been told that major infrastructure work is going on to prepare for the 2020 debut of the new show. This is part of the reason why an interim show is needed to fill the void from the closing of Illuminations in the Summer of 2019 to the opening of ‘A Celebration of Disney Music’ in 2020. The new Epcot nighttime World Showcase Lagoon spectacular is just a small piece of the transformation of the 36 year old park.
