The Walt Disney Company, including Walt Disney himself, have always had conservation and environmental responsibility as one of their company objectives.  Walt Disney himself said “conservation isn’t just the business of a few people. It’s a matter that concerns all of us.”  The Walt Disney Company is taking its next step in its conservation responsibility and will eliminate all plastic straws and stirrers in all of its properties worldwide by mid-2019.

The Walt Disney Company joins a growing list of companies and government to start the process of eliminating excess plastic pollution.  Most recently Seattle joined a growing list of U.S. cities to ban plastic straws and major corporations such as McDonald’s in the United Kingdom to stop the unnecessary use of these straws and stirrers.  The Walt Disney Company says that they will have a reduction of more than 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers annually.

“Eliminating plastic straws and other plastic items are meaningful steps in our long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products. “These new global efforts help reduce our environmental footprint, and advance our long-term sustainability goals.”

If you have stayed in a Walt Disney World Resort over the past few months you may have noticed that some of the resorts have eliminated the single bottle of H20 products.  Now, they have not taken them away but have installed refillable dispensers that are fixed to the wall (think public bathroom soap dispensers).  Disney states that over the next few years they will continue to transition to refillable in-room amenities in the hotels and cruise ships, reducing plastics in guest rooms by 80 percent.

The Walt Disney Company has been focused on conservation for many decades and this is just another step in their quest to play a small role in helping our planet.  You can learn more about Disney’s commitment to the environment by visiting www.thewaltdisneycompany.com/environment.  Talk about it in our all-new WDW Kingdom Forums!
