Even though Solo: A Star Wars Story hit the $100,000,000 mark in domestic ticket sales over the 4-day weekend period, it still did not hit the estimated number Disney anticipated.
According to Box Office Mojo, Disney anticipated domestic ticket sales to be $130 – $150 million after the 4-day holiday weekend but the total estimated number falls roughly $30 – $40 million short. The second “Star Wars Story” installment brought in another $65 million in foreign sales to bring the worldwide total to $165 million.
When comparing Solo: A Star Wars Story to the first Star Wars Story, Rogue One, the first release brought in $155 in domestic tickets sales in the opening weekend. Now, keep in mind that it was released in December and that was only a 3-day weekend number compared to this past 4-day weekend number but is this a sign of things to come.
Is Disney pushing out too many Star Wars films and the luster is coming off or is it simply the quality of the story line? For those of you that follow this closely you probably did notice a lack of marketing for Solo: A Star Wars Story in comparison to previous releases. Was this Disney’s way to slow the push of the franchise down a bit? Do they realize there is a bit of Star Wars overload going on? To be fair, there are many factors that influence a specific weekend’s box office take that may have nothing to do with the film. First, it was Memorial Day weekend in the United States. For many people this is a time to gather as families and not necessarily head to the theater. Weather also plays a big factor when you look at certain box office numbers. The country was dealing with a lot of weather this weekend. So in reality you cannot specifically pin point one or two reasons for a slow box office weekend. The good thing is the next Star Wars film is not slated to release until December 20, 2019 when the final chapter of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars Episode IX, is scheduled to hit theaters. There will be plenty of time to build up the hype!
