Very soon Walt Disney World Resort guests will be able to open their resort room door using a digital key. This is the next wave of the My Disney Experience App digital uses. You can currently book your Fastpasses, dining reservations and recently added mobile food ordering directly from the App on your mobile device and soon you will be able to open your resort room door and more.
This digital key feature will be located on the My Disney Experience App directly on your mobile device. Along with opening your room door you can use the digital key to unlock the hotel entrance gate and common area doors requiring a key, including pools, fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges.
In order to open doors with this new feature you will have to tap the unlock button, open your My Disney Experience App and hold it to the door lock. This seems a bit more complicated then the current method of simply using your MagicBand that is already on your wrist but we believe its the direction the Walt Disney Company is heading. The MagicBands cost money to produce and I feel this is the start of Disney trying to put all of the features on the colored bands into your mobile device.
The digital key feature on the My Disney Experience App will roll out first to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and assuming it is a success it will expand Resort wide.
What do you think of this change? Do you think Disney is eventually going to phase out the MagicBand? Talk about it in the WDW Kingdom Forums.
